AbstractNeste trabalho foi analisado o regime de ondas ao largo do litoral do nordeste brasileiro imposto pelos distúrbios atmosféricos africanos de leste. Foram utilizados os campos de vento produzidos pelo modelo atmosférico GFS do NCEP e as simulações de agitação marítima do modelo WAVEWATCH no período de fevereiro de 1997 a janeiro de 2004. A análise dos resultados revelou que durante os meses de julho, agosto e setembro os ventos de superfície de leste intensificam-se na região onde ocorrem os distúrbios, isto é, ao longo do cinturão definido pelas latitudes 5N e 20N. Casos extremos com ventos acima de 18m/s e ondas com altura significativa acima de 4 m ao longo do cinturão foram selecionados. Verificou-se que, embora os ventos tenham intensidade suficiente para gerarem altas ondas, a pista é pequena e com rápido deslocamento em direção oeste. Estas características contribuem para reduzir a transferência de energia do vento para a superfície do oceano. A agitação marítima provocada pelos distúrbios de leste que chega ao litoral do nordeste brasileiro é muito pequena quando comparada à agitação marítima dominante produzida pelos ventos alísios, e por este motivo não interfere no regime de ondas local. In this research the sea surface wave regime incident offshore the Northeast Brazilian littoral imposed by the surface meteorological easterly African waves was analyzed. The wind fields produced by the NCEP-GFS atmospheric model and the wave sea surface generated by the wave model WAVEWATCH for the period from february 1997 to january 2004 were employed in the study. The results revealed that during July, August, and September the surface winds are stronger along the belt defined by the latitudes 5N and 20N were the easterly African disturbances developed. Events with speed above 18m/s and significant wave height greater than 4 m along the belt were selected. We obtained that, although the winds have intensity strong enough to generate high waves, the extension and duration of the fetch, responsible by the sea surface waves, are reduced due to its rapid westwards displacement. The swell incident into the Northeast Brazilian littoral from these selected events are smaller in comparison with the significant wave heights produced by the dominant trade winds and do not interfere in its local wave regime..
